Fantastico: Italian students excel at language event


Nine Canfield High students showcased their Italian language skills by earning honors at the 34th annual Italian Language Contest Saturday on the campus of Youngstown State University.

More than 200 high school and elementary students studying Italian participated in the event. Each student was required to recite an Italian poem from memory and additionally, the high school students had to read a passage in Italian.

In the Italian I competition, Tierney Chesney took top honors, while Brianna Settle finished third. In Italian II,

Katie Fernstrom earned honorable mention.

Gretchen Scheel won the Italian III event, while teammate Bryan Clark was honorable mention.

In Italian IV, Canfield swept the top three spots. Annaliese Torella won the competition, while Jordan Ricks and Anthony D’Angona tied for second. Mark Pagano finished third. Hillary Fowler, Joseph Mikolay, Bella Delorenzo and Deena Cattaneo all earned honorable mention.
