Canfield's Brode, Fitch's Tolich win state titles


Canfield senior Dustin Brode won state titles in the shot put weight throw and Fitch junior Ali Tolich swept those events as well at Saturday's Division I indoor state track and field meet at the University of Akron.

Brode's throw of 70 feet, 4 inches edged out Fitch senior George Thomas, who threw 66-10 to finish second. Brode is a Harvard recruit and Thomas is headed to YSU. He threw 64-3 to win the shot, beating St. John's Jesuit's Cody Riffle (59-2).

Tolich threw 42-6 1/4 to win by almost two feet in the shot put and then threw 49-11 in the weight throw to win by almost seven feet.
