Canfield wrestling celebrates 2009-10 season

Canfield wrestlers and their families gathered to celebrate the Cardinals’ 2009-10 season at an awards banquet at The Georgetown Mar. 16.

The dinner featured a team slideshow and a key note address from guest speaker Matt Narducci, a Canfield High wrestler from the class of 2006. Narducci has wrestled at John Carroll University for four years.

The coaches from Canfield High School and Canfield Village Middle School thanked wrestlers and their families for their hard work and support this season.

Canfield High Head Coach Dean Conley also commended coaches Derick Fletcher, Rich Donadee and Randy Langham for their commitment to the program.

The high school team coaches honored several players with special awards.

The “Hammer” award, given to the team’s most aggressive wrestler, went to senior team captain Leo Daprile, a four-time letter winner. The intensity award was given to senior captain Mark Douglass.

The most valuable wrestler award went to junior captain Robby Reed. Junior captain Alex Benedict took home the coaches’ award. Benedict was a first team all-league selection for the All-American Conference and the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League.

The sportsmanship award went to junior Ethan Olson and junior PJ Hido was recognized with the character award. Junior Richard Rapone was given the team’s spirit award.

Junior Eric Mirto was honored as the team’s most improved wrestler.

The coaches’ recognized Jake Mellinger as an outstanding opponent. Mellinger is a senior wrestler at West Branch High School.

The high school team also honored 14 wrestlers with scholar athlete awards.

CVMS coaches Steve DeMaiolo and Jason Neopolitan presented awards to the middle school wrestlers. The middle school team earned the league championship for the 2009-10 season. Seven middle school wrestlers will compete in the state tournament this weekend.
