Canfield team talks its way to third

Hamilton earned third place at the 2010 Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament. .Canfield was the only team to finish in the top five at both the 2009 and 2010 Ohio High School Speech League State Tournaments.

The Canfield Speech and Debate team earned third place with 51 points at the 2010 Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament March 5-6.

The team took first in “Cumulative Sweepstakes” for its prolonged success.

Canfield’s Maggie Wagner was the state champion in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. State runners-up were Emma Shebat and Mark Pagano in Public Forum Debate and Marisa McGrath in Impromptu Speaking.

Jillian Smith placed fourth in Humorous Interpretation, John Vagas was fifth in United States Extemporaneous Speaking and Chloe Gebacz placed sixth in Impromptu Speaking.

Nathan Pecchia and Rosie Jo Neddy were semifinalists in Duo Interpretation. Erin McGlone in Oratorical Interpretation, Gabby Schiraldi and Mary Wirtz in Original Oratory, Ishmeet Grewal, Kelly Fleming and Vineet Rai in International Extemporaneous Speaking, and Marcus Shutrump and Jordan Teutsch in Duo Interpretation were quarterfinalists.

Other Canfield state qualifiers were Kendra Fischer in Prose and Poetry Reading, Andrik Massaro in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Arthur Brant and Maggie Watt and Kelly Ranttila and Aly Saleh in Public Forum Debate, James Evans and Carly Magnuson in Duo Interpretation and Bradley Laufman, Rob Gross and CJ Blaney in Congress.

In June, Li, Shebat, Mark Pagano, Schirald and Smith will compete at the 2010 National Forensic League National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

The Canfield Speech and Debate Team is coached by Jeremy Hamilton, Carole Bogar, Stephen Foley, Samantha Nesnidol, Ramon Ramos and Colleen Ruggieri.
