Canfield students, in a joint venture with the Canfield Rotary Club, collected more than $26,000 to provide shelter and disaster relief to earthquake victims in Haiti.

District schools organized three drives to raise money for Rotary International’s Shelter Box program.

Students at C.H. Campbell and Hilltop elementary schools raised $8,574 during a five-day collection drive, spearheaded by C.H. Campbell teacher Melinda Guerrieri and principal Kent Polen.

The Leo Club at Canfield Village Middle School raised $7,351. The Interact Club at Canfield High School, which is sponsored by Canfield Rotary, raised $2,300.

The Rotary responded to the students’ generosity with their own donations, bringing the total to $26,300.

Students and Rotarians presented their donation to Shelter Box USA board member Jack Young at the Canfield Rotary’s weekly luncheon Mar. 5.

“I admire you for what you are doing,” Young said. “You truly represent what Rotary is all about — service above self.”

The Shelter Box program delivers portable boxes of essential equipment to victims of natural disasters worldwide. The boxes are tailored to their destination, and include a 10-person tent and survival supplies.

The students’ donation will provide 26 shelter boxes to victims in Haiti. Each box costs $1,000, including the price of assembly and delivery.

More than 10,000 shelter boxes are needed in Haiti, Young said.

“This money will be used for those shelter boxes,” he said. “They will be sent to those who need them.”
