Boardman students excel at annual Italian competition

Neighbors | Submitted.Students from Boardman's Italian classes participated in the 34th Annual Italian Language Contest Mar. 3 at YSU. .Each student was required to recite an Italian poem from memory.

The 34th annual Italian Language Contest was held Mar. 13 at Youngstown State University with more than 200 high school and elementary students studying Italian participating in the event.

Each student was required to recite an Italian poem from memory and the high school students had to read a passage in Italian.

Students came from Boardman High School, Canfield High School, Howland High School, Lowellville High School, New Castle High School, Poland High School, Holy Family Elementary in Poland and St. Christine’s Elementary in Youngstown, Villa Maria Teresa School and Holy Redeemer School in Elwood City, Pa.

First-place winners from Boardman in Italian I were Michael Marshall, Monique Fernback, Dom Zocolo, Alyssa Vivacqua, Brittany Lockard, Laura Davis and Nicole Deley.

Brittany Jenkins, Brittany Clevenger, Victoria Sotus and Jon Cambouris too second.

Third-place winners were Michael Homsey and Giovanna Silvestri.

Zachary Carnahan and Carly Zaitzew received honorable mention.

In Italian II, winners were Alexis Burns, Stephanie Davis, Anthony Colella and Paris Wallace.

Second-place went to Sam Cervone, Tara Amero, Jacob Whitford, Robin Eisenbraun, Michael Rich, Ryan Wiant and Zack Weese.

Third-place winners were Jennifer Bresnahan, Gina Eliser, Eric Thomas, Taylor Beshara and Kelsey White.

Megan Honen, Kaleigh Huck, Brandon Pasqual, Jordan Wolfe, Anthony Pacella, Julianna Boerio and Kyle Malice received honorable mention.

In Italian III, Megan Chambers, Luis Salomon, Mary Smrek and Leslie Dubiel took top honors.

Anne Kandray, Kelsey Crossen and Gregory Durkin were second and Vincent Pilolli, Samuel Cambouris, Samantha Binsley and Julie Sokol were third.

Bethany Haddle, Katelyn Heney and Elizabeth D’Apolito received honorable mention.

First-place winners in Italian IV were Doriyon Glass, Lauren DeLuca, Anthony O’Nesti and Sarah Garwood.

Nicole Davis and Marra Cercone were second and Gregory Ferenchak placed third.
