McDONALD

Village council has approved a $3,827,869 operating budget for 2010.

The budget was passed on third reading at its meeting Wednesday and will be submitted to the Trumbull County auditor’s office in time to meeting the April deadline, Mayor Glenn W. Holmes said.

Holmes said the village ended 2009 more than $1.7 million in the black, adding that he anticipates also wrapping up this year with a carry-over.

“We like to keep a healthy cash position and labor costs down,” the mayor said.

Similarly, projects set to get under way this summer include resurfacing a large portion of Olive Street near the Niles Bridge. About $380,000 in federal-stimulus money was allotted for the work, but it appears the cost will be closer to $200,000, Holmes noted.

Another is adding sidewalks to busy McDonald Avenue, which is the main thrust of a federal Safe Routes to School grant the village was awarded, the mayor said.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is to oversee the work, estimated at around $200,000, and disburse the funds, the mayor said.

The sidewalks are needed to make it safer for students to walk to McDonald High and Roosevelt Elementary schools, Holmes added.
