A 19-year-old Youngstown man is charged with felonious assault, accused of hurling a meat cleaver at his mother.

Christian A. Bonilla was arrested Wednesday morning on East LaClede Avenue, Youngstown, on a warrant. He was placed in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $12,500 bond.

On Sunday, police were called to the Hopkins Road home of Bonilla’s mother, 40. The woman’s daughter told police that Bonilla started an argument with his mother because he didn’t like the advice she gave him against dating a 14-year-old girl.

The man’s mother doesn’t speak English.

The argument escalated, and Bonilla picked up a meat cleaver from the kitchen counter and threw it at his mother, striking her forearm. Bonilla then fled the house. The mother was treated at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Police arrested a Farrell, Pa., woman on a felony-theft charge, accusing her of taking about $8,000 in bank deposits from her employer.

Tina McGhee, 38, was released after posting a $4,000 bond. McGhee, a former employee of Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Market Street, turned herself in to police Wednesday morning.

The restaurant’s owner had reported the theft earlier this month, saying he suspected a manager who hadn’t returned to work after being questioned about the missing money.

McGhee admitted to police that she took about $8,000 in bank deposits from the restaurant while she was employed as a manager there, a police report said.

The thefts occurred from January to February.
