Three resurfacing projects in Trumbull and Mahoning counties have been recommended to receive federal stimulus dollars.
The technical-advisory committee of Eastgate Regional Council of Governments recommended funding Thursday for Tibbetts Wick Road, Glenwood Avenue and Warren Sharon Road. The recommendations must be approved by Eastgate’s executive panel.
Only about $1 million — left over from last year’s stimulus projects — is available for resurfacing projects in Mahoning and Trumbull counties through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Under the program guidelines, the projects have to be ready to go, said Ken Sympson of Eastgate.
To be recommended for the federal dollars, the governmental entities had to agree to and be able to pay 20 percent of the project cost.
Resurfacing of Tibbetts Wick from U.S. Route 422 to state Route 11 in Liberty Township will cost about $495,000 in federal money. That project was requested by the Trumbull County engineer’s office.
The total cost for resurfacing Glenwood from Falls Avenue to Mahoning Avenue is $484,304. Youngstown requested $387,443.
“For the last couple of years, we’ve been working on gateways into the city,” said Charles Shasho, the city’s deputy director of public works.
That section of Glenwood is rough including potholes and uneven patches, cracking and wheel tracks, according to the city’s application.
The Warren Sharon Road project is to resurface from state Route 7 to Yankee Run Road in Brookfield Township. Its total cost is $650,000 with $520,000 requested in stimulus funds.
“This is one of the higher-traveled roads in Trumbull County,” said John Picuri, deputy engineer.
Requested funding for the three projects exceeds the $1 million available, but other funding administered through Eastgate likely will be available to help with costs.
Struthers, Lowellville, Canfield city and Youngstown also had sought funding for resurfacing work.
