YSU baseball loses big lead at Pittsburgh, 15-11

PITTSBURGH, Pa.

The Youngstown State baseball team had a nine-run lead before the Pittsburgh Panthers scored 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and went on to defeat the Penguins, 15-11, at Trees Field on Wednesday.

Armani Johnson, Jacke Healey, Eric Marzec, Joe Iacobucci and Derek carr had two hits each for the Penguins (6-6). Healey hit a home run, his sixth of the season, and a double. Iacobucci also hit a homer and double, while Johnson added a home run and Marzec had a double.

Blake Aquadro allowed five runs in 61‚Ñ3 innings but got no help from his relievers.

Corey Vukovic didn’t retire a batter, allowing three runs, and Kevin McCulloh allowed four unearned runs in 1‚Ñ3 inning.

Women’s tennis

Youngstown

YSU lost 4-3 to Pittsburgh at the university’s courts.

YSU’s Lauren Hankle pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Adela Aprodu at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles Anna Volkova had a rough start, but battled back in three sets to beat Shannon Benic 4-6, 6-1, 11-9. Tanisha Welch pulled through for the third singles win of the day when she topped Gabrielle Cantanzariti 6-4, 7-5.

Men’s golf

YSU opened the spring season with a 13th-place finish at the 54-hole, South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational at Primm Valley Golf Course.

The Penguins fired a team total of 927 (309-314-304) and were led by Anthony Conn, who carded a three-round total of 230 (81-76-73) to finish 40th.

Nebraska won the 17-team event.

Also for YSU, Michael Lower was 47th, Ryan Stocke finished 53rd, Joe Santisi was 71st and Tim Morrow finished 80th.
