Wapashuwi Lodge, Order of the Arrow of the Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America, met for a winter banquet recently at Newton Falls Community Center. Highlighting the evening was the presentation of several awards.

The Wapashuwi Lodge Arrowman of the Year Award is presented to one adult and one youth each year in recognition of their outstanding service to the lodge while exemplifying the spirit of the Order of the Arrow.

Receiving the 2009 Youth of the Year Award was Tyler Harden, a member of Boy Scout Troop 143 of Niles, who serves as lodge Webmaster and is taking the position of vice chief of communications.

The 2009 Adult of the Year Award went to David Oaks of Hubbard, scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 100 in Hubbard. He has served the lodge as the 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conference Contingent Leader and is a Vigil Honor member.

The Founder’s Award is given to those who memorialize in their everyday life the spirit of achievement. Recipients were Chad Gottberg, a member of Troop 101 in Struthers, a Vigil Honor member, and Mike Kupec, a member of Troop 25 in Canfield, a Vigil Honor member and an associate adviser for communications.

Brandon Oaks, vice chief of Native American Heritage and member of Troop 100 in Hubbard, received the Waldorf Award in recognition of his exemplary enthusiasm, dedication and contributions to Native American Heritage.

Congratulated as 2009 Vigil inductees were Brandon Oaks and David Reho of Troop 56 in Fairport Harbor.

Jay Kuester of Troop 31 in Niles announced that David Oaks, Robert York and David York, of Troop 101 in Struthers, are 2010 Vigil Honor candidates.

Replacing Jim Freeman of Painesville as lodge adviser will be Walt Iliff of Eastlake.

Closing remarks were by Freeman and Mitchell Andrews, lodge chief.
