Help the hungry

Sparkle Markets are participating in Check Out Hunger to raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank during March.

Sparkle Market customers can help feed hungry families by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon located in the checkout lane.

Sparkle Markets is also accepting nonperishable food items during March.

School challenge

YOUNGSTOWN

WFMJ 21 has issued an annual Harvest for Hunger School Challenge to help feed hungry families.

The challenge is open to all elementary and middle schools in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

The school that collects the most pounds of food during March will win a pizza party from Wedgwood Pizza.

The food must be delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road, no later than April 2.

Free spine scans

Town-hall meeting

Prevention Partners Plus, along with other local organizations, including the Coalition for Capable & Healthy Youth, is offering a “Parents Who Host Lose the Most” town hall meeting March 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Park Experimental Farm, Kenneth F. McMahon Hall, 7574 Columbiana- Canfield Road.

The meeting features a panel of community leaders discussing proposed changes to Ohio’s Social Host Law, Canfield’s new ordinance on the matter, and underage drinking.

Public celebration

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown City Health District is offering a public celebration of National Public Health Day on April 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the department’s office at 345 Oak Hill Ave.

The celebration includes free blood pressure, cholesterol, tuberculosis and blood- sugar testing. People who want blood-sugar and cholesterol screening should fast at least eight hours before they are tested.

Free cancer kit

The American Cancer Society has developed a free Personal Health Manager kit that helps cancer patients learn more about their cancer, organize information and keep track of medicines and appointments.

The kits are specific to the type of cancer that was diagnosed.
