A.D. 461 (or A.D. 493, depending on sources): St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, dies in Saul.

1910: The Camp Fire Girls organization is formed. (It is formally presented to the public on this date two years later.)

1960: A Northwest Orient Lockheed L-188C Electra crashes near Cannelton, Ind., killing all 63 people on board.

1970: The United States casts its first veto in the U.N. Security Council. (The U.S. kills a resolution that would have condemned Britain for failure to use force to overthrow the white-ruled government of Rhodesia.)

1985: Ohio Senate Minority Leader Harry Meshel of Youngstown says attempts by Republicans to make political hay out of Gov. Richard Celeste’s decision to close 70 savings and loans will backfire when people realize the seriousness of the situation.

Ohio Sen. Richard H. Finan, a Cincinnati Republican, introduces a bill that would establish a firm formula for creating courts based on caseload that would result in the elimination of some judgeships, including at least one Youngstown Municipal Court judgeship.

1970: The $25 million truck line at the General Motors Lordstown complex rolls out its first van, a dark blue model.

Mahoning County Welfare clients are being referred to jobs right out of the welfare office, Ezell Armour, welfare director, reports.

1960: Lt. Frank Watters, chief of the Youngstown Police Morals Squad, is named to head a special investigation squad into the murder of racketeer S. Joseph “Sandy” Naples and his girlfriend.

Struthers City Council approves a 1-mill increase in the income tax, bringing the total to an even 1 percent.

1935: Howard Sidley, a 30-year-old gasoline station proprietor, is killed during a robbery at a service station in Mercer by a man wielding an ax, who struck Sidley in the head.

Youngstown housewives are paying twice as much for pork than they did three months before, and butchers say that even so it is difficult to make a profit on pork.
