J.J. Cafaro pleads guilty in Akron, taken to jail
AKRON — John J. Cafaro, a former Cafaro Co. vice president, pleaded guilty to making a materially false statement this morning in U.S. District Court here, and was placed in jail until Monday.
District Judge John R. Adams quizzed Cafaro and his lawyer, Ralph E. Cascarilla of Cleveland, about a problem a court official has had in obtaining financial information about Cafaro, 58, of Liberty.
The missing information was affecting the judge's ability to allow Cafaro to be released on bond pending his sentencing June 8.
The judge set a Monday hearing date to further discuss the bond. After the hearing, a U.S. Marshal took custody of Cafaro to hold him in jail until Monday, despite further discussion between Cascarilla and U.S. Attorney Justin Roberts.
Cafaro's tentative sentencing range will be between no time up to six months in a federal prison.
Cafaro made the false statement concerning a contribution to the unsuccessful 2004 congressional campaign of his daughter, Capri Cafaro.
