Students to perform, exhibit artwork

Arts/EXCELEBRATION, the year-end performance and exhibition by Arts/EXCEL students, will be Friday. The drama and music performances will be at the Downtown YWCA, 375 Park Ave., and the visual art will be on display at Trumbull Art Gallery, 196 E. Market St.

Arts/EXCEL, a program among 20 Trumbull County schools and the Trumbull County Educational Service Center, lets students develop their talents in art, dance, drama and singing. Approximately 150 students participate.

Open poetry slam and jazz concert

Art Outreach Gallery in Eastwood Mall will host the Niles School District’s Creative Arts Reception and Weekend Arts Event this weekend.

From 6-9 p.m. Friday, eighth-grade band students, the high school jazz ensemble and solo performances will perform in the gallery. At 3 p.m. Saturday, the gallery will host an open poetry slam for high school students, originated by Beth Sheets, a freshman at Niles McKinley High School. All high school students are invited to read their poems, rap or sing — as long as it’s original. Registration begins at 2:30 p.m.

‘Stoning of Soraya M.’ at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

The Jake Erhardt International Film Series will show “The Stoning of Soraya M.” at 7 p.m. next Tuesday in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center at Westminster College. The event is free to the public. Westminster film-studies students will introduce the film and lead a discussion after the showing.

The 2008 film is set in Iran in 1986 and centers on a woman whose arranged marriage to an abusive man has a tragic ending.
