Arraignment set for homicide suspect

YOUNGSTOWN

Jamar Houser, the 19-year-old facing a possible death penalty if convicted in the Jan. 23 homicide of Angeline Fimognari at St. Dominic Church, will be arraigned at 9 a.m. today in the courtroom of Judge James C. Evans of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

The county grand jury indicted Houser, of Volney Road, on March 4 on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery with death- penalty specifications and being a felon with a gun. Fimognari, 80, of Sheridan Road, was fatally shot in the head in the South Side church’s parking lot after leaving the 8 a.m. Saturday Mass.

Anti-crime program

The Mahoning County Farm Bureau and the county sheriff’s office have established a partnership to promote the Ohio Farm Bureau’s $2,500 anti-crime reward program. That program was recently endorsed by the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association, which consists of all 88 county sheriffs in Ohio.

The reward is paid to those who provide law enforcement with information leading to the arrest and conviction of people committing arson, burglary, vandalism and other felonies on Farm Bureau members’ properties.

Police responded at 1:16 a.m. Monday to a report of theft at Total Waste Logistics, 1025 Bundy Road, where someone had gained access to the landfill by ramming the gate open. Among items taken were two space heaters and hand tools.

“Just like You” is the theme for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Organizations devoted to serving people with developmental disabilities are planning events in March to raise awareness of the many abilities people have, regardless of disability, said the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

“Just like You” encourages people to bring diversity to their communities by welcoming people with disabilities into local neighborhoods, workplaces, houses of worship and schools.

Fairhaven School kicked off its recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month recently with events such as pajama day, crazy-hat day and Fairhaven Bulldog Spirit day. The school also partnered with the American Cancer Society and had a mini Relay for Life for students and their families.

Mahoning County Skywarn, a volunteer organization of weather spotters, will have a training program on how to recognize approaching storms and tornadoes at 6 p.m. next Tuesday in the auditorium of Fitch High School. The event is free and open to the public.
