Howland post home to have garage sale

HOWLAND

Howland American Legion Post 700 and its women’s auxiliary are having a garage sale Saturday and March 21 at the post home at 8273 High St. N.E. (off state Route 46 behind the police station) to benefit community and veterans programs.

Early-birds can shop from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday for a $2 admission fee.

General public hours, for which there is no admission fee, are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and March 21.

Food will be available, and there will be a bake sale, new-blanket sale and 50/50 and basket raffles.

People who wish to donate items for the sale, excluding large furniture, are asked to drop them off at the post home after 5 p.m. Friday.

E. Palestine seaman serving on carrier

YOUNGSTOWN

Navy Seaman Aaron L. Stevens, son of Sheree and Aaron Stevens of East Palestine, is a crew member of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), which recently received the Battle Efficiency Ribbon or Battle “E” award, given to the most battle-ready carrier in the Pacific fleet. Stevens is a 2005 graduate of East Palestine High School.

YSU grad attains rank of Army major

POLAND

Army Maj. Gerald A. Nunziato Jr., son of Jerry and JoAnne Nunziato of Poland, was promoted to his present rank while stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Nunziato, who is preparing for his second deployment to Afghanistan, graduated in 2000 from Youngstown State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

He participated in the Army ROTC program at YSU and was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation.

Nunziato, a 1995 graduate of Middletown High School, Middletown, Md., has served two tours in Iraq and received numerous commendations, including three Bronze Stars and the Combat Action Badge.

DEPLOYED

Guardsman returning from war zone

Army National Guard Spec. Girard J. Tell is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom.

Tell, the son of Girard J. Tell of Hammonton, N.J., and Monica A. Fatato of Youngstown, is a signal support systems specialist assigned to Headquarters, 150th Assault Helicopter Battalion, based in Lakehurst, N.J.

He is a 2007 graduate of Hammonton High School.
