Tolich sweeps weight events with state’s best throws

Ali Tolich and the rest of the Fitch High track team have been preparing for the outdoor season by competing in several indoor meets.

The Austintown Fitch boys and girls track and field teams provided some impressive performances in the indoor track meets at Kent State University Saturday and Sunday.

For the girls team, Ali Tolich won the weight throw with a toss of 50-3 and the shot put with a throw of 41-4. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in both events and No. 10 in the nation in the weight throw. She will be competing in the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston this weekend.

MaKayla Martin placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 and is currently ranked third in the state in the event.

For the boys team, George Thomas finised second in the weight throw with a toss of 59-0 and is currently ranked second in the state in the event.

Te’John Lawrence placed fifth in the 60-meter dash in 7.03 and fifth in the 200 meters in 22.71. He is currently ranked 10th in the state in the 200 meters and 11th in the 60 meters.

Jay Jakovina was sixth in the high jump after clearing 6-1 and is currently ranked 15th in the state in the event.

Thomas, Lawrence, Jakovina, Andy Cercone, Jen Shiley, the boys 4x400 meter relay and the girls 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams will be competing in Geneva, Ohio, this weekend at the American Scholastic Indoor National Championships.
