St. Charles Catholic School jump-started its fundraising efforts for Relay for Life Mar. 4 with a volleyball tournament in the school gymnasium. Seventh and eighth-graders competed against each other for bragging rights in a tournament that lasted more than three hours. Each team consisted of six members and the students were responsible for creating a team name and uniform. The event was free of charge, but donations were taken at the door.
The school also sold pizza, beverages, pastries and tickets for a 50/50 drawing for the Relay for Life fund. The tournament was the first of several upcoming events leading up to Youngstown State University’s Relay for Life April 16. Future events include a mini relay, where various students walk around the school gym continuously throughout the day, and a luminary ceremony for cancer victims and survivors.
