mahoning CoUNTY JAIL
The layoffs and closings are necessitated by an anticipated revenue cut announced by county Administrator George J. Tablack of between $4 million and $5.7 million below the sheriff’s $17.5 million in operating expenses in 2009.
The sheriff’s actual operating budget this year may be as low as $11.8 million, compared with his request, which totaled $19.4 million.
The sheriff said he was forced to issue the layoff notices after negotiations between his command staff and the Fraternal Order of Police concerning layoffs and extended concessions collapsed.
The sheriff’s office saved $1.9 million last year through an unpaid floating holiday for all union and management employees every two weeks.
The floating holiday agreement with the FOP expires June 30.
