Friday’s college basketball roundup
BIG TEN
Illinois 58, No. 13 Wisconsin 54
INDIANAPOLIS
Mike Tisdale scored 21 points and Demetri McCamey had 13 as fifth-seeded Illinois hung on in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals. The Fighting Illini (19-13) are hoping the win solidifies their NCAA hopes. Wisconsin (23-8) was led by Trevon Hughes and Jon Leuer, each with 14 points. Hughes led a frantic flurry in the closing minutes that got the Badgers in position to force overtime. But Jason Bohannon’s 3-pointer with 15.9 seconds left clanked off the front of the rim, Mike Davis grabbed the rebound for Illinois, made 1 of 2 free throws and the Illini hung on. The loss ended Wisconsin’s four-game winning streak and prevented coach Bo Ryan from earning his 600th career win.
Purdue 69, Northwestern 61
E’Twaun Moore tied a career high with 28 points to help Purdue. JaJuan Johnson had 22 points and eight rebounds for the Boilermakers (27-4). Moore and Johnson were the only Purdue players who scored more than five points. John Shurna scored 16 points, Drew Crawford had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Michael Thompson added 12 points for the Wildcats (20-13). Purdue remained hopeful of gaining a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament by improving to 3-1 without forward Robbie Hummel, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. The Boilermakers either Michigan State or Minnesota.
BIG EAST
No. 22 Georgetown 80, Marquette 57
NEW YORK
Greg Monroe had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Georgetown finally got the better of Marquette in a victory that sent the Hoyas to the Big East tournament title game for the third time in four years. Chris Wright followed his 27-point performance against top-seeded Syracuse in the quarterfinals with 15 points for Georgetown (23-9), which put the game away with a 14-1 run with under 10 minutes to go. The Hoyas will play Notre Dame or West Virginia tonight.
MAC
Akron 66, Western Michigan 64
CLEVELAND
Chris McKnight scored on a putback with 6.8 seconds left and defending champion Akron survived one last shot by Western Michigan’s David Kool to advance to the final of the Mid-American Conference tournament. McKnight grabbed a miss by Steve McNees underneath and scored to put the Zips (24-9) ahead. Kool, who finished with a career-high 39 points, then missed a potential game-tying jumper just before the horn. Akron, which needed double overtime to get past Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals, will be making its fourth consecutive trip to the final.
