YSU tops Wagner in softball

ORLANDO, fla.

Junior Kim Klonowski, sophomore Kristen Philen and freshman Vicky Rumph had three hits apiece and the Youngstown State softball team had 15 as a team in a rain-shortened 11-5 win over Wagner on Thursday at the Rebel Games.

YSU’s game against Bryant was rained out.

Klonowski went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and five RBIs and Philen went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Rumph drove in two runs with three singles.

Junior Danielle Chase pitched 22‚Ñ3 innings of relief to pick up her first win of the season.

The Penguins jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Klonowski hit a two-run homer, her first of the season, before a run-scoring single by Rumph, a RBI-double by Philen and a run-scoring single from sophomore Amanda Palmore.

Philen’s two-out single in the second gave the Penguins a 6-0 lead and their four-run third inning made the score 10-0.

After Wagner scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, Klonowski doubled home Thomas to put the Penguins ahead 11-4.Wagner added another run in the top of the sixth.

The Penguins face La Salle at 1 p.m. and Florida A&M at 3 p.m. today to close out their Florida trip.

On Wednesday, freshman Hana Somogyi pitched six innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, as YSU defeated Saint Louis 5-3.

The Penguins dropped their second game to South Dakota, 4-3.

Senior Cheryl Cale picked up her first save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

The Penguins scored five times in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Kim Klonowski doubled home Kristina Rendle, Jordan Ingalls, who went 3-for-4, singled home Kristina Davidson, and Autumn Grove doubled to left-center field and plated Ingalls and Vicky Rumph. Amanda Palmore’s single to right field scored Grove with the fifth run.
