Real estate taxes due in Mahoning County
Real estate taxes due in Mahoning County
youngstown
Today is the last date for payment of first half of 2009 real-estate taxes without penalty, Mahoning County Treasurer Lisa Antonini said. Any payment that is mailed with a postmark of March 12 will be considered on time.
By law, a 10-percent penalty will be assessed if payments are received after March 12, Antonini said. It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to secure a tax bill. Failure to receive a tax bill will not void the penalty for the late payment.
If you have not received a tax bill, call the treasurer’s office at (330) 740-2460.

Widow sues motorist
YOUNGSTOWN
A widow has sued an East Auburndale Avenue man she said was the second of two motorists to strike her husband, who died of injuries he suffered while attempting to cross South Avenue near Ravenwood Avenue on March 17, 2009.
Melissa Larsen, of Gladstone Street, Campbell, widow of Paul Larsen, sued Keith E. Abron for more than $25,000 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The suit says Abron negligently failed to maintain a proper lookout for her husband as he lay injured in the road and dragged him about 150 feet.
The first motorist to hit Larsen fled the scene of the 9 p.m. accident, police said. Abron could not be reached to comment. The lawsuit, which demands a jury trial, is assigned to Judge Lou A. D’Apolito.
For women only
AUSTINTOWN
Harley-Davidson Biketown, 5700 Interstate Blvd., is sponsoring a free, women-only “Garage Party” from 6 to 8 p.m. today that offers women a chance to discover how they can get involved with motorcycling.
Interactive stations showcase Harley-Davidson MotorClothes and ways to customize a bike to reflect individuality and ergonomic needs. Parties are being thrown throughout the month of March, National Garage Party Month, in Harley-Davidson dealerships across the country.
Women represent 23 percent of all motorcyclists, according to Harley-Davidson. Garage parties create an intimidation-free zone and an opportunity for women riders to connect with one another, the company said.
