Downtown water-valve breaks repaired

Downtown water-valve breaks repaired

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

A water-valve break left those on West Federal Street between Hazel Street and Fifth Avenue without water for about 7 hours Thursday.

The city’s water department was initially called late Wednesday morning to West Federal Street, in front of the Taft Technology Center, because a fire hydrant broke and water was pouring out of it, said Joseph Dunlap, the department’s superintendent of construction.

After department workers shut off the hydrant, the valve on a 20-inch waterline broke, causing even more water to flow onto West Federal Street, Dunlap said.

The valve was repaired late Wednesday, but the water department wasn’t done making repairs.

A valve at Hazel Street broke Thursday morning, causing water to spill on to that street, Dunlap said.

In order for the city to make the necessary repairs, those on West Federal Street, between Hazel Street and Fifth Avenue, were without water from 10:30 a.m. to about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The repairs also resulted in the closing of West Federal Street, near the Taft Technology Center, to vehicular traffic for portions of Wednesday and Thursday.
