Abolish the death penalty

Abolish the death penalty

This letter is in response to the column in the Saturday, Feb. 20, edition by Marc Kovac concerning the frequent use of the Ohio death penalty.

Although, I in no way condone the crimes that have been committed by prisoners on death row, neither can I condone the apparent satisfaction of Mr. Kovac in seeing the death penalty carried out so frequently in Ohio. Perhaps if he would get to know how they have conducted their lives since their crimes, he would not be so free with his apparent wish to empty Ohio’s death row. And it might be added that in numerous studies, the death sentence has not been proven to be a deterrent to crime. This is one of the reasons why many states have abandoned the practice.

Christ taught us that all life — even the lives of those on death row — have great value. Perhaps Mr. Kovac should consider this and instead write a column asking for the abolishment of the death penalty. We would all be better served.
