Liberty schools superintendent retiring

LIBERTY — Mark Lucas, school superintendent since 2007, will retire June 30.

His entire 36-year career as an educator was spent in Liberty Local Schools. He started as a middle-school teacher in 1974, holding numerous other positions and roles in the school district.

As superintendent, Lucas helped manage the district through steep and continuing losses in state funding.

He also was committed to various educational initiatives, improving student achievement and worked hard to provide the appropriate resources for teaching and learning while operating within a budget affected by additional state mandates and constant reductions.
