Cleveland school board approves overhaul

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland school board has approved an overhaul of the shrinking district that would close or move 16 schools.

The board passed the plan in an 8-1 vote Tuesday.

Schools Superintendent Eugene Sanders says the goal is to raise low test scores and improve a 54 percent graduation rate.

In June, the district will close 14 elementary schools and two high schools — 10 percent of its facilities.

The Cleveland Teachers Union has suggested further discussion so teachers, parents and the community have more say in the plan.
