YSU’s Thomas named Horizon’s top batter

Youngstown State sophomore Haley Thomas has been named the Horizon League softball batter of the week.
Thomas went 7-for-13 (.538) and recorded four triples in four games. In the Penguins’ 12-0 victory over South Carolina State, Thomas tallied four hits, including two triples.
She had a 1.231 slugging percentage and .625 on-base percentage as YSU went 2-2.
Her four triples already rank tied for third on Youngstown State’s single-season chart.
This week the Penguins are playing at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla.
On Sunday, the Penguins lost to Indiana State, 5-3, before defeating Penn, 10-3.
The Penguins (2-6) capitalized on four Quaker errors and Kim Klonowski went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Kristen Philen drove in a pair of runs while Kristina Rendle scored three times and Caroline Krombach went 2-for-4.
The Penguins scored two runs in the first, one on Jordan Ingalls’ sacrifice fly.
After Penn tied the game at 2-2, back-to-back run scoring singles by Autumn Grove and Philen put the Penguins ahead 5-2.
The Penguins made it 7-2 by scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and scored three more in the seventh.
Kayla Vallery picked up her first career victory, tossing 31‚Ñ3 innings of relief and allowing one earned run.
In the opener, Cheryl Cale threw a complete-game four-hitter but walked six and was plagued by a two-out, three-run error in the third inning.
Klonowski went 2-for-4 and drove in all three YSU runs while Krombach added two singles.
