WYSU program receives award

YOUNGSTOWN

An episode of WYSU-88.5 FM’s public affairs program “Lincoln Avenue with Sherry Linkon” has been awarded a 2010 Ohio Public Images Media Award. The episode, which featured guests Larry Duck and Frank Santisi, won in the Documentary/Public Affairs category. It explored the challenges facing people with disabilities and their families.

The OPIM Awards honor individuals and organizations who create a greater understanding and acceptance of people with developmental disabilities.

Linkon is a professor at Youngstown State University, where she also co-directs the Center for Working-Class Studies. Her weekly show (7:30 p.m. Wednesdays on WYSU 88.5 FM and WYSU HD1) examines issues related to cultural diversity, economics and education.

Networking night features comedians

YOUNGSTOWN

The Regional Chamber, the city of Youngstown and WNCD-93.3 FM are sponsoring a night of networking three comedy acts April 3 at the Youngstown Club. Headlining are Mike Armstrong and Sean Morey, with Bill Squire as the support act.

Armstrong and Morey are both regulars on “The Bob & Tom Radio Show.” The event is open to the public.

‘Smoke on Mountain’ at Salem theater

SALEM

Salem Community Theatre, 490 E. State St., will present “Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming” for three weekends, beginning Friday. The musical, the third in a series, reunites the gospel-singing Sanders Family and includes 25 bluegrass-gospel favorites. It is set in the Appalachian mountains. The Sanders family’s son has returned from the war, and the pastor is preparing to leave for a new congregation. Director Mark Frost, assistant director Cheryl Kekel, musical director Gary Kekel, and the entire cast are returning. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and March 19, 20, 26 and 27; and 2 p.m. March 21 and 28.

Artist featured in exhibition

CANFIELD

An exhibition of 44 paintings and illustrations by Canfield artist Christopher Leeper is on display at the Zanesville Art Center through April 17. Ohio Magazine is also featuring the artist in its March issue.

Leeper is the president of the Ohio Watercolor Society. The exhibition explores the range of his work, from Ohio landscapes and portraits to children’s book illustrations.

Leeper’s work can also be seen at the McDonough Museum of Art on the Youngstown State Univeristy campus in the Biennial Faculty Exhibition, which runs through March 19.
