YSU can’t make shots in defeat
MILWAUKEE, WIS.
Freshman Brandi Brown turned in another outstanding performance, but she was the lone bright spot in the Youngstown State’s 73-39 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday.
The defeat was the 30th straight for the Penguins (0-29, 0-18 Horizon League), dating to last season.
Youngstown State opens Horizon tournament play on Monday at Wright State.
Brown, who should be named to the Horizon All-Freshman team next week, finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Penguins on Saturday.
She was only three steals short of a triple-double, finishing with seven.
The only negative to Brown’s day was her shooting — 4 of 15 from the field and 4 of 11 at the line.
But those numbers simply mirrored Youngstown State’s as a whole.
The Penguins were simply awful shooting the ball. They were 13 of 67 from the field (19.4 percent), including 4 of 26 on 3-pointers (15.4 percent).
And they were just 9 of 20 at the foul line (45 percent).
Compounding YSU’s shooting woes was a 57-39 disadvantage in rebounds.
Kaitlyn March added 11 points for YSU, which has lost 30 consecutive road games, dating to the 2007-08 season.
Milwaukee (11-18, 6-12) was led by Amanda Viehauder with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsay Laur added 12 points and Ashley Imperiale finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.
The Panthers led 35-23 at halftime.
