Boardman coach Al Dohar said from the beginning this could be a special year for the Spartans bowling team.

“We had everyone back but one girl after finishing fourth last season,” said Dohar after the Spartans captured their first state title with a 3-1 win over Westerville Central in the OHSAA girls bowling championships on Saturday at Shawnee Lanes.

The Spartans, the No. 2 seed following the qualifying round of three regular games and three Baker System games, swept both Coldwater and Hubbard 3-0 in the best-of-five Baker System quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

After taking a 2-0 lead in title match, the Spartans lost Game 3, 201-156.

Boardman sealed the deal with a 198-185 win in Game 4.

Junior Tiffany Terlecki led Boardman with a 642 series to make first-team All-Ohio. Ciarra Moran had 639 to make second team, and senior Amanda Van Fossan shot 615 to gain honorable-mention status.

Other Spartans scores included Angela Kaczowka 386, Tiffany Dugan 375, Rachel Dugan 185 and Becca Babnic 136.

Hubbard finished third, with sophomore Samantha Dudley shooting 652 and senior Amanda Cornell shooting 641 to gain All-Ohio status.

Niles junior Samantha Monroe placed 39th and Canfield junior Sarah Bolina finished 62nd out of a field of 138 girls.

Monroe’s 540 series included games of 174-226-140.

The state appearance was Monroe’s first.

“It was nerve-wracking and I was pretty scared,” Monroe said of her first ball.
