Malkin’s goal in OT lifts Pens

NEW YORK

Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal 3:42 into overtime on Pittsburgh’s 55th shot at Henrik Lundqvist, and the Penguins outlasted the New York Rangers 5-4 on Thursday night.

Malkin, who earlier in the overtime advantage struck a goal post and was robbed by Lundqvist’s outstretched glove save, finally got a puck past the goalie when his drive from the left circle bounced in off Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky. It was the third Penguins goal that went in off a Rangers player.

Pittsburgh held the Rangers to 16 shots overall and only one after the second period. The Penguins went 5-1 against their Atlantic Division rivals this season. New York had a three-game winning streak snapped.

The 50 saves were a career high for Lundqvist, who stopped 45 shots in a 1-0 shootout loss to New Jersey on Jan. 12.

Defenseman Wade Redden’s hooking penalty 1:45 into overtime set up the winner.

Backup goalie Brent Johnson earned the victory, despite saving only four shots in place of ineffective starter Marc-Andre Fleury.

Thursday’s other games:

Hurricanes 4, Senators 1: Tom Kostopoulos and Rod Brind’Amour scored about a minute apart in the first period, Manny Legace made 25 saves and Carolina won its seventh straight.

Bruins 3, Maple Leafs 2, SO: Tim Thomas made 24 saves in regulation and overtime and added three more in the shootout.

Thrashers 6, Islanders 3: Nik Antropov had two goals and an assist, and Clarke MacArthur and Evgeny Artyukhin scored in their Atlanta debuts.
