Police plan to charge suspect in Pa. inmate death
INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — State police say they’ll file charges against an inmate suspected of strangling another at a western Pennsylvania prison.
Trooper John Matchik, the spokesman for the police barracks in Indiana, Pa., says the charges will be filed late Thursday morning.
Until then, police are not identifying the inmate suspected of killing 29-year-old Jayson Mahlon Robert Stewart. He was found dead about 3 a.m. Sunday in his cell at State Correctional Institution-Pine Grove, in White Township. That’s about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Authorities say the victim and suspect had bunked together in a restricted housing unit. Inmates can be sent there for disciplinary reasons or for their own protection if they are suicidal or threatened by other inmates.
