2 ‘critical’ after fire

A 4-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man are in critical condition in the burn unit at Akron Children’s Hospital after firefighters pulled them unconscious from a smoke-filled house at 525 Maryland Street N.E. early Tuesday.

Firefighters removed Jarvarie Crenshaw, 4, and Mark Sheets, 22, from separate bedrooms on the second floor of the house, gave them oxygen and took them to local hospitals, said Ken Nussle, Warren fire chief. Both were later transferred to the Akron hospital.

Three people escaped the 8:27 a.m. fire and were outside when firefighters arrived, Nussle said, adding that there was a working fire alarm in the house that was still sounding.

The three who escaped were Sharon Albert, 38; Brittany Sheets, 25; and JayQwon Crenshaw, 5. The two Crenshaw boys are apparently brothers, Nussle said. Albert was described as “grandma,” Nussle said.

It appears that all but JayQwon Crenshaw received treatment for their injuries at a local hospital, Nussle said.

Albert had apparently ingested a great deal of smoke and was covered in soot, apparently from trying to rescue others, Nussle said.

There was only a small amount of fire visible in the upstairs when firefighters arrived, but there was a great deal of smoke, Nussle said, estimating damages at about $20,000.

Firefighters responded quickly to the home, arriving 3 to 31‚Ñ2 minutes after receiving the call and rescuing the boy about 71‚Ñ2 minutes after arriving, Nussle said. Mark Sheets was rescued about a minute after that.
