Suspension for officer who released wrong inmate

Staff Report

WARREN — The inmate who was mistakenly released from the Trumbull County jail on Friday afternoon turned himself in a few hours later, and the corrections officer who mistakenly released him was suspended without pay for three days, Sheriff Thomas Altiere said.

Derrick Delshaun Allen, 25, of Fourth Street Southwest, was released from the jail at about 2:30 p.m. Friday. Judge Terry Ivanchak of Warren Municipal Court had ordered him held without eligibility to make bond because of a probation violation. He was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of official business.

After he was gone a couple minutes, jail officials discovered the mistake and alerted Warren police to be on the lookout for him, but he was not found.

Sheriff Altiere said he turned himself in Friday night after “a few hours” out on the street.

The jail had intended to release Delshaun Lemont Allen, 25, of Third Street Southwest, officials said.

Both men are black, about 6 feet tall. Derrick Allen is listed at 180 pounds, Delshaun Allen is listed at 160 pounds.

Sheriff Altiere said the corrections officer who made the mistake is a “new employee” who “learned a lesson.”

Altiere said an assistant warden normally doublechecks the release of prisoners, but that did not happen in this instance.

“It must have been a real busy time or something,” Altiere said Monday.
