Lordstown mulls renaming part of road

LORDSTOWN — Village council moved forward a resolution Monday that will change the name of a portion of Hallock-Young Road to General Motors Parkway. Final approval of the resolution is expected April 5.

The name change applies only to the section of Hallock-Young that runs from Tod Avenue to Bailey Road by the GM Lordstown complex.

“The suggestion came from a resident, and I think it’s a great gesture,” said Michael Chaffee, Lordstown mayor. “We noticed that other communities have taken similar steps.”

Council President Arno Hill joined several speakers, however, opposing the name change during a public hearing shortly before the council meeting. They warned of possible confusion caused by the new designation and argued against changing a long-established street name.

The mayor spoke in favor. “We’re hoping that we can have the name change included with the ceremony that marks the 45th anniversary of the GM plant in Lordstown and the launch of production of the Cruze this summer,” Chaffee said.
