YOUNGSTOWN — It didn’t matter that we had places to go; Mother Nature just let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
This past month was easily the snowiest February on record in the Mahoning Valley.
The 36.3 inches last month broke the old record of 31.7 inches set in 2008.
“It was a lot of snow,” said Karen Oudeman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.
The National Weather Service has recorded snow amounts for the Valley dating back to 1934. The service measures weather for the Valley at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna Township.
Because of that, the official measurement for the major snowstorm Feb. 5 and 6 was 8.4 inches. But several communities in Mahoning and Columbiana counties had 20 inches of snow or more over that two-day period.
There were only five days last month without snow.
The area averages 10.5 inches of snow in February.
As of Monday, the Valley had 74.6 inches of snow this winter season, or 32.8 inches more than normal, according to weather service statistics.
This winter isn’t in the top 10 when it comes to the most snow — yet.
The 10th-snowiest winter season was 1987-88, when 77.7 inches fell. That’s only 3.1 inches more than this winter season’s snow total.
The snowiest winter was 2007-08 with 102.8 inches of snow.
The Akron-Canton area was the king of February snow in Northeast Ohio with 37.2 inches of snow last month, according to the weather service. That area’s old February record was 25.8 inches in 2008, Oudeman said.
