Grant signs an act creating Yellowstone National Park. In 1890, J.P. Lippincott publishes the first U.S. edition of the Sherlock Holmes mystery “A Study in Scarlet” by Arthur Conan Doyle. In 1954, Puerto Rican nationalists open fire from the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives, wounding five congressmen. In 1981, Irish Republican Army member Bobby Sands begins a hunger strike at the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland; he dies 65 days later. In 2003, suspected 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is was captured by Pakistani and CIA agents.

March 1, 1985: Two Massa–chusetts Institute of Technology professors are studying a new local contract between the Packard Electric Division of General Motors and Local 717 of the IUE as an example of a possible new era in labor-management relations. The contract provides lifetime job security for the present workforce and a multi-tiered wage schedule for new hirees.

March 1, 1970: S. Sgt. Martin Walker Jr., 21, captain of the Brookfield High School football team in 1966, is reported killed during night maneuvers in Vietnam.

Republic Steel Corp. unveils a line of modular homes made of steel that was developed by a consortium of six companies headed by Republic at the request of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The houses could help solve the nation’s acute housing shortage.

City Engineer Edmund J. Salata is told that Youngstown will receive no State Highway Department assistance in resurfacing state highways inside the city in 1970.

March 1, 1960: Youngstown City Council approves a 7 percent pay hike for city employees and a 1-mill boost in the city income tax, bringing it to an even 1 percent.

Two massive earthquakes and a tidal wave strike the Moroccan port city of Agadier, with initial reports of 700 dead.

March 1, 1935: A mystery letter received by the 28-year-old brother of Frank Suhovecky led searchers to the spot in Lake Cohasset where the boy’s body was found. The anonymous writer said he saw an old man dragging something toward a stone bridge in the park, but thought nothing of it at the time (13-year-old Frank’s disappearance had not yet become news).

Mahoning County’s relief machinery, which cares for some 50,000 indigents, comes under the supervision of Ohio Gov. Martin L. Davey, who could order a restructuring.
