Warren city schools will offer a limited supply of bricks from the Alden and Devon school buildings now being demolished. The bricks from Alden were available starting last week and at Devon starting Wednesday. Bricks are being offered to the community as memorial keepsakes at no cost. There is a limited quantity, and bricks are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the demolition site. The school district requests that the public limit the number of bricks to two per person.

Likely heart attack

A Mahoning County jail inmate found dead in the jail’s medical unit at 9 a.m. Sunday likely died of a heart attack, according to Sheriff Randall A. Wellington. The county coroner’s office was performing an autopsy Monday on Jeffrey L. Thompson, 47, of Sherwood Avenue, who entered the jail Wednesday after city police arrested him on a charge of violation of a civil protection order from the county’s domestic-relations court.

10-year prison terms

Two Canton men received 10-year prison terms after they pleaded guilty to a series of western Mahoning County home burglaries that occurred last year. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court imposed the sentences Monday on Ronald J. Hashman, 36, who pleaded guilty to 12 burglary counts, and Shane J. Mazon, 38, who pleaded guilty to nine burglary counts. In the same case, Judge Krichbaum had sentenced Amanda Wilhite, 26, and Sara L. Alton, 34, both of Massillon, to two years in prison last week after both women pleaded guilty to two burglary counts and agreed to testify against Hashman and Mazon if those men had gone to trial. The burglaries occurred in Canfield, Green, Goshen, Milton and Berlin townships.

Speed estimated

AMBRIDGE, Pa.

Police estimated a motorcyclist from Hermitage, Pa., who was killed in a Sunday collision was going 70 mph in a 45-mph zone when he hit a car that was turning left in front of him and was ejected from the motorcycle. Killed in the 5:30 p.m. crash at state Route 65 and 4th Street was Timothy Wayne O’Brien, 50, of Spencer Road, who was northbound on Route 65. The car was being driven southbound on Route 65 by Daniel R. Sisco, 63, of Rochester, Pa., who was not injured.

$190K grant for institute

EAST LIVERPOOL

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving a $190,000 grant to NewLife Technical Institute in East Liverpool to expand its student-support services. The agency helps train those who come from a background of poverty in information technology. The agency will use the money to assist students and provide transportation for those who live in outlying areas. The grant was announced by U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of St. Clairsville, D-6th.

Drug-abuse charge

Police were dispatched to the intersection of Hadley at Mansell Drive at about 9:10 p.m. Sunday about a suspicious vehicle and people standing in the road. Police charged Darrell M. Ford, 37, of Trumbull Court, Youngstown, with drug abuse after finding a bag of marijuana and a marijuana cigarette. He will appear today in Girard Municipal Court.

Police took a report Saturday from a 23-year woman who said she was raped the night before in her North State Street apartment. The accuser told police she had gone to a bar in Warren about 9 p.m. and a friend arranged for a man to give her a ride home. The man gained access to the residence by asking to use the bathroom and then raped her, she said.
