Puerto Rican birth certificates valid until Sept. 30

Puerto Rican birth certificates will be valid until Sept. 30, thanks to a recent amendment approved by the Puerto Rican government.

The island will begin distributing new birth certificates Thursday, which was the previous deadline of the certificate’s validity. The three-month extension is meant to provide a transition period for Puerto Ricans who need a new birth certificate immediately.

The Puerto Rican government decided to issue new birth certificates to combat fraud and identity theft.
