Summer is here and we’ve spotted a few solutions for beating the heat

It’s hot fun in the summertime, but cool times are coming.

Area lakes are ready for Mahoning Valley residents who will be seeking relief from the heat and humidity.

Mosquito Lake State Park just had its beach area cleaned and screened, making it much bigger and the sand a bit deeper.

Park Manager Doug Lyons pointed out that Mosquito Lake is one of the largest lakes in Ohio and has added two new yurts, or camping tents that sleep four, complete with grill, microwave and picnic table and which are close to the water for weekend getaways. The marina area has had a third of its docks refurbished.

Berlin Lake in Berlin Center has a diversity of campsites, from wooded waterfront ones to grassy spots in the sun, and an ideal family campground.

Facilities provided include flush toilets, hot showers, a large boat-launching ramp and a sanitary- disposal station. A limited number of campsites also are equipped with electric hookups. The Mill Creek Recreation Area campground is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

On July 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Berlin Lake’s Day Use Area next to the Mill Creek Campground, Bobber the Water Safety Dog will be part of the Water Safety Extravanganza. Call 330-547-3781 for more information.

Lake Milton State Park added a new amphitheater last year in addition to its 600-foot beach with change booths, showers and a playground.

New this year, said Barb Neill, park manager, is “Friday Night at the Movies.” Movies will be shown on the beach starting at dusk.

There are three launch ramps at Lake Milton, and seasonal dock rentals are available.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources stocks area lakes with walleye, large-mouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish.
