Dead jail inmate likely had heart attack, sheriff says

A Mahoning County jail inmate found dead in the jail’s medical unit at 9 a.m. Sunday likely died of a heart attack, according to Sheriff Randall A. Wellington. The county coroner’s office was performing an autopsy Monday on Jeffrey L. Thompson, 47, of Sherwood Avenue, who entered the jail Wednesday after city police arrested him for an alleged violation of a civil protection order from the county’s domestic relations court.
