Reception set for Downies on anniversary

POLAND

Mr. and Mrs. William E. Downie of Poland will celebrate 60 years of marriage on July 3 during an afternoon reception at their home. Invitations for the event have been issued by their children and their spouses, who will host the festivities.

They are the parents of William (Jill) Downie of Youngstown; Brian (Mary) Downie, Washington, D.C.; Bruce (Carolyn) Downie, Chagrin Falls; Brad (Sue) Downie, Boardman; Blair (Darcy) Downie, Troy, N.Y.; and Barth (Judy) Downie of Tiffin. Completing the family are 16 grandchildren and twin great-granddaughters.

Mr. Downie and the former Marjorie G. Thomas were married June 17, 1950, at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown. They are members of Holy Family Church.

Mr. Downie, who served with the U.S. Navy from 1941-1946, retired in 1989 as president of the W.E. Downie Co. Inc. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He is a member of Boardman Lions Club, Youngstown Shrine Club and Poland Masonic Club.

Mrs. Downie graduated from Youngstown College with a bachelor of arts degree and did post-graduate work at Western Reserve University. She was employed in the office/lab of Dr. W.S. Curtis of Youngstown, and later became vice president of the W.E. Downie Co. Inc. She is affiliated with the Friends of Poland Library and the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America.
