VETERANS

Health fair set

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A Veterans Affairs Health Fair is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Post 343, 134 North Jefferson St. All veterans are invited.

The fair is offered by Shirley Noga, director, Lawrence County Veterans Affairs, and Gary Zarilla, veterans employment representative, in conjunction with the Butler Veterans Administration.

Veterans will be able to take part in health screenings, including blood pressure and diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Behavioral health-care information also will be available.

They also can enroll in the VA and determine eligibility for programs. Officials will have information on Vietnam/Agent Orange, Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Women Veterans Healthcare Services Program, the VA’s award-winning online prescription refill program. Veterans should bring a copy of their DD-214.

Reunion party

ALLIANCE

The U.S. Armed Forces Retirees Club of the Alliance Armory, Ohio Army National Guard, is planning a reunion party for all former and retired members of Howitzer Battery, 2nd Squadron, 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment on Sept. 25 at the Alliance Armory, 1175 West Vince St., Alliance, from 2 to 6 p.m.

This unit has a history in the service dating back to the Civil War when it was organized as Company K, 8th Infantry Regiment. The unit has participated in every conflict in which the U.S. has fought.

Virtual museum

QUANTICO, VA.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps recently launched its virtual experience website — http://virtualusmcmuseum.com — that enables visitors from across the world to experience and explore the museum dedicated to honoring the history of the Marine Corps.

With in-depth, special educational features on exhibits, galleries and artifacts as well as museum docents sharing their stories of Marine Corps history, the virtual experience brings the NMMC into the office, home or classroom.

Jones is motor officer

Army 1st Lt. Patrick Jones was promoted to his current rank while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. He is the battalion motor officer assigned to Co. B, 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team.

Jones is the son of Gene and Nancy Jones of Hubbard. He is a 2000 graduate of Hubbard High School and has bachelor and master’s degrees in exercise, leisure and sport from Kent State University. He received his commission in 2008 through the ROTC program at KSU.

Aviation safety award

YOUNGSTOWN

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher A. Vidovic, son of Crystal L. and Adrian J. Smith of Jefferson, Ohio, assigned to the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, recently received the 2009 Admiral Flatley Memorial Award for aviation safety. Vidovic is a 2006 graduate of Jefferson High School and joined the Navy in June 2006.

WARREN

Air Force Tech. Sgt. Brian D. Averhart received an associate degree in applied science from the Community College of the Air Force. Averhart, an aeromedical evacuation contingency planner with 14 years of military service, is regularly assigned to the 421st Combat Training Squadron, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J.

He is the son of John W. and Karen M. Averhart of Youngstown, and graduated in 1995 from The Rayen School. His wife, Le-Toyja, is the daughter of Christine James of Youngstown.

Nuclear-power training

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew R. Miskovch, son of Katherine and Richard Miskovch of Warren, recently completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course with Nuclear Power Training Unit, Ballston Spa, N.Y., and was designated a nuclear power operator. Miskovch, a 2008 graduate of Champion High School, joined the Navy in August 2008.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Milo D. Rodgers has arrived for duty at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Vienna. An air transportation apprentice assigned to the 76th Aerial Port Squadron, Rodgers is the son of Bernice R. Corbin of Austintown, and is a 2000 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School.
