BOARDMAN

The Boardman Fire Department extinguished a fire in a laundry room of Newport Glen Apartments, 4131 Glenwood Ave., around 3:40 p.m. Friday. Residents of the building were evacuated.

Route 617 closing

Beginning Monday, state Route 617 will be closed for 30 days between Beard and Unity roads for two culvert replacements.

The detour will be state Route 165 to state Route 14 to state Route 170. Access to all residences and establishments will be maintained during construction. The work is the beginning of a $300,000 project to replace three culverts on Route 617 near Unity Road.

Two of the culverts are between Beard and Unity, and the third culvert is between Unity and Route 170.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by October.

Road closing

Austintown

Silica Road between Ohltown and Victoria roads will be closed starting Tuesday. The Mahoning County Engineer’s Office plans to replace a culvert on the road. Work should take one day, and the road is scheduled is reopen Wednesday. Traffic will be detoured to Victoria and Ohltown roads during the closure.

Grave clearing

MINERAL RIDGE

Weathersfield Township crews will be clearing off graves in Kerr Cemetery next week. The township will remove anything that does not comply with the regulations.

This is being done to ensure safety and beautification within the cemetery, township officials said.

Regulations include: Flowers may be planted up to 12 inches in front of any monument; no flowers are permitted on the backside of any monument or marker; fences are not permitted; no trees, shrubs or ornamental plants are permitted; no stones, gravel etc. are permitted around a grave site; all grounds must be cleared up starting April 1; hanging baskets or plants cannot be displayed on any metal fixture or shepherd’s hook; no artificial flowers, except when placed in a vase that is mounted or secured onto the base of a monument; balloons are not permitted. Holiday decorations will be removed in 10 days.

FOP scam

NORTH JACKSON

Ken Frost, Jackson Township police chief, wants to inform residents that calls claiming to be the township’s Fraternal Order of Police asking for money are a scam.

Frost said a handful of residents called the station Thursday letting him know they’d received phone calls from someone who said he was with the Jackson Township FOP.

“I wanted to let people know that the police department is not soliciting donations,” he said.

Frost said any resident who has received a similar call should contact him at 330-538-3093.

Turtle derby

YOUNGSTOWN

The Lions Club will host its 49th annual turtle derby at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Lowellville Car Show on East Water Street. Admission is free. Children can help race the live turtles.

Raffles will take place for the following: four tickets plus food to a Cleveland Indians game; four tickets to an Indians game; two prizes of $150 cash; and a lifetime membership to the Children’s Museum in Youngstown.

This is the Lions Club only fundraiser of the year. It enables them to give monetary donations to the community. This year, to date, they have donated more than $20,000 to various causes. To sponsor a turtle or make a donation, call Nancy Cuffle at 330-503-0777.

Corporate power

YOUNGSTOWN

David Cobb, the 2004 Green Party presidential candidate, will talk about the political influence corporations have over government at 7 p.m. Monday at Lemon Grove Cafe, 122 W. Federal St.

The speech is part of the restaurant’s Monday Discussion Series and is free and open to the public.

Among the topics Cobb, an attorney from California and political activist, is expected to discuss is the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
