Team EOWL third at wrestling championships

Local wrestlers from around the area came together to create Team Eastern Ohio Wrestling League to compete in the team portion of the 2010 Ohio Tournament of Champions. They placed third in the tournament. .The team members were from Austintown, Canfield, Howland, Poland and Kane, Pa.

Middle school wrestlers from Austintown, Canfield, Poland and Howland joined together to create Team Eastern Ohio Wrestling League (Team EOWL) to compete in the team portion of the 2010 Ohio Tournament of Champions (TOC) in Columbus April 25.

TOC is national wrestling event held in the Columbus Convention Center.

Team EOWL finished third in the individual points portion, which was based on the performance of the individual team members in the 64-man brackets.

Team EOWL also placed third in Division III of the middle school’s dual meet portion. In the preliminary rounds, Team EOWL beet Team Dynamic from South Carolina in round one and Ohio Gray in round two.

The team lost to the all-star team of Team West Virginia in round three.

In the medal rounds, Team EOWL lost to Team Bad Boys from Maryland in the semifinals, but beat Ohio Scarlet in the consolation finals to clinch third place.

Team EOWL members included Austintown’s Alexander Mackall (80 pounds), Anthony Moffo (85), Zach Mackall (110) and Luke Peterson (133); Canfield’s Steve Daprile (90), CJ Frost (95), Korey Frost (105), David Labra (115), Bryan Batton (120), Alec Buchenic (140), Shawn Williams (160), Paul Harris (180) and Curtis Burns (heavyweight); Akron Manchester’s Joey Bowen (75); Kane. Pa.’s Jacob Westerburg (100); Howland’s Donato Natale (126) and Poland’s Michael Audi (150).

Team EOWL was coordinated by Canfield’s Steve Demaiolo and Jason Neapolitan.
