Students celebrate Poland through poetry

Forty-five teens submitted poems for the contest.

Five teens from Poland Middle School earned the top prizes in the “Celebrate Poland” poetry contest.

Marty Malenic, seventh-grade student at Poland Middle School, took top honors with a poem about Poland in a contest held by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County in honor of the Celebrate Poland event.

The library’s TeenXTreme Program sponsored the contest.

There were 45 entries received in the contest which gave teens in grades seven through 12 an outlet to express their pride in their community. Winners will have their entries published on bookmarks which will be distributed at the Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Autumn Moore, a seventh-grader, came in second, and Emily Moon, also a seventh-grader, came in third. Seventh-grader Sabrina McCollums and eighth-grader Bree Carzoo received honorable mention.

The contest was judged by former Poland teacher Rahlia McVeay, PHS teacher Larry Bartos and PMS teacher Patrick Williams.
