Youth flag football league registration continues

Registration is still open for Valley youth wishing to play flag football this fall as part of the Youngstown Youth Flag Football Association.

Games are played Sunday afternoons at Boardman High School. Age divisions are 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 10-11, 12-14 and co-ed. Each participant receives an exclusive NFL jersey.

In addition to football, the league offers cheerleading squads.

Canfield junior golfers compete

After a scoreboard playoff, Dominic Carano of Canfield edged Akron’s Philip Martin in the boys 13-15 category of the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf Kenny Novak event at Fox Den Golf Course.

Initially, the NOPGA web site had Carano as a non-qualifier behind Martin after both shot 73.

After the revision, the 14-year-old Carano was declared the champion, while Martin was relegated to runner-up. However, both qualified to advance.

Among girls 16-19, Whitney Graff of Canfield shot 87, but finished second.

Canfield’s Zach Eckert was tied for 29th with a 92 in the boys 16-19 division.

Brode takes shot put at Midwest meet

Dustin Brode of Canfield broke the shot put record with a winning throw of 67-11‚Ñ2 at The Midwest Meet of Champions.

The record was 65-61‚Ñ2, set in 1985 and he also broke the stadium record of 61-4.

The meet drew some of the top seniors from Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

Team Ohio won the boys’ meet with 201 points, followed by Michigan (139) Indiana (132.5).

In the girls’ meet, Ohio scored 195.5 points, trailed by Indiana (148) and Michigan (129.5).

Canfield hockey player recognized

Canfield High ice hockey player Scott Sittig recently received the “Hoby Baker Character Award” for 2010 for his play in the tough Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League (GCHSHL).

The award is named in honor of an outstanding amateur hockey player who played at Princeton and later died in World War I.

For Canfield High this year, Sittig, a senior, earned his third varsity letter and was named team MVP.

Cardinal radio gets some help from the locals

CardinalRadio.com will be web casting a live audio feed from McCune Park in Canfield for the 11 to 12 year-old Canfield Baseball Club championship.

The championship game is slated for Wednesday 7:45 p.m. Cardinal Radio’s Randy Emery will handle the play by play and Canfield High School baseball coach Matt Koenig will have the color analysis.

Cardinal Radio is also announcing a summer series on its web site, “Canfield Legends,” which will feature a weekly interview with some of Canfield’s most notorious sports figures.

The first interview is scheduled with Dick Weiss, former longtime Canfield High School athletic director.

Local runners win church 5K run

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Festival 5K Fun Run June 10 saw area residents come out and show their support by running. The men’s overall winner was 22-year-old Ross Lenehan from Austintown with a time of 16:06. The women’s overall winner was 15-year-old Jen Love from Canfield with a time of 20:47. Two men’s records were broken. AJ Crisucci broke the record in the 30 to 34 age group with a time of 16:38. Rich Kempe set the new mark in the 55 to 59 age group with a time of 19:36.

Graduate to continue success at YSU

Canfield’s Mike Podolsky will further his education at Youngstown State, where he will be a member of YSU’s basketball team.

While at Canfield, Podolsky was a three-year starter, three-year letterman, and two-time All-Conference first team selection, helping the Cardinals to a 47-15 record during that time.

As a senior, he was named to the Division I NEO All-District first team, was named Division I All-Ohio Honorable Mention, and was selected as a team captain.

Podolsky completed his high school career as Canfield’s second all-time leading scorer (940) and holds single-game records for points scored (41) and field goals made (17). While at YSU, he plans to major in Business-Finance.

Cooper named to All-Ohio baseball squad

Canfield’s Brett Cooper earned honorable mention All-Ohio in Division II by the Ohio Baseball Coaches Association.

Community bike ride set for July 11

A recreational bicycle event called “Ride The Tour” will be July 11 as a prelude to the Tour of the Valley race.

The “Ride” is a 10- to 25-mile trek through Mill Creek Park. The goal of the community ride is to bring people together to recognize the spirit of the city. The ride begins at 8:30 a.m.

Adult flag football league starts July 10

The Youngstown Flag Football Association will offer an adult 4-on-4 league this summer.

League play begins July 10.

Canfield Little Cards sign-ups set

The Canfield Little Cardinals will offer an opportunity for youth to sign up for the 2010 season Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at the McCune Park Administration Building.

The season will begin Aug. 1 and run through October.

Cost is $75 for a registration fee and a refundable $25 fee for use of equipment.

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and Valley Home Health Care will put on a softball game Aug. 7 at Eastwood Field.

Camp offers opportunity for young players

Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini and Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops will headline Cardinal Mooney’s annual “Camp of Champions” Monday through Wednesday.

University of Arizona football coach Mike Stoops and Waynesburg coach Rick Shepas will also serve as camp coaches. All four are Mooney High graduates.

The camp takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Mooney’s campus and is open to those entering grades four through nine.

Other guest clinicians include Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach Michael Zordich, Penn State offensive coordinator Jay Paterno, Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, Kent State defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis, YSU offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery, Florida linebackers coach D.J. Durkin, YSU secondary coach Ron Stoops, Nebraska running backs coach Tim Beck, Georgetown defensive line coach Frank Colaprete and Northwestern State receivers coach Matt Kubik.

In a new addition to this year’s camp, Don Beebe’s House of Speed will hold an athletic combine from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 June 29, allowing athletes to compete in speed drills such the 40-yard dash along with other agility, power and quickness drills.

Fitch girls soccer camp registration

Girls entering grades three through eight in any community are eligible to attend the 2010 Fitch Girls Soccer Camp July 19-22 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fitch grass soccer fields behind Frank Ohl Intermediate.

Fitch girls coaches Carlo Trafficante, Tex Martin and John Breedlove will be instructors for the camp, along with Fitch girls varsity soccer players.

Each camper will be provided with the opportunity to become better overall soccer players. Topics to be addressed include foot skills, agility training, defending, passing and receiving, combination play, anticipating play, movement off the ball, finishing and goal tending.

The cost of the camp is $40 per player. In addition to instruction, each player will receive a Fitch soccer camp T-shirt. On the final day of camp, team competitions will take place with prizes awarded to the winners.

Players should bring soccer cleats, shin guards, a soccer ball (put your name on it), water and tennis shoes (in case we have to go indoors due to inclement weather). Don’t bring valuables or jewelry.

Local athlete to play at Mount Union this fall

Thomas Beck, a forward on Cardinal Mooney’s soccer team, has announced he has accepted an athletic grant-in-aid to play Soccer at Mount Union College.

He was the captain of the Mooney squad this season and a four-year letterman. In addition, Beck was named boys soccer “Athlete of the Year.”

He was selected to the all- district team as a junior and senior and named an Academic All-Ohio performer this year. In addition he was named first team All-State and Region IV All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association.

Annual bocce social at MVR Sunday
