Guilty plea entered in Obama student loan case


DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A second person charged with looking at President Barack Obama’s student loan records has pleaded guilty.

John Phommivong pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court in Davenport.

Phommivong is among nine former employees of Vangent Inc. who have been charged with illegally accessing Obama’s records while they were employed by the U.S. Department of Education contractor in Coralville.

Phommivong is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 24, along with Mercedes Costoyas of Iowa City who also has pleaded guilty.

Phommivong faces up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. His hometown isn’t listed in court records.

A telephone message left for his attorney wasn’t immediately returned.

Trial for the other defendants is set for Aug. 2.
