Four Valley standouts earn $1,000 from OHSAA

Four area athletes earned $1,000 scholarships from the Ohio High School Athletic Association recently at the organization’s 18th annual scholar-athlete banquet.

Maplewood senior Thomas Bottorff, West Branch senior Kate Cline, Springfield senior Ashley Davis and East Palestine senior Shane Peterson were selected based on a point system that rewards students for grade point average, ACT or SAT scores, varsity letters earned, individual and team athletic honors and an essay.

The recipients were selected by special committees within each of the six OHSAA athletic districts. Recipients of athletic scholarships from NCAA Division I or II institutions were not eligible for the award.

Additionally, nine Valley senior earned $500 scholarships from the Northeast District Athletic Board.

They were McDonald’s Nicola Accordino, Lordstown’s Keeley Chaffee, Poland’s Dominic DeFelice, Western Reserve’s Shane Ewing, Struthers’ Nick Ragan, West Branch’s Joey Schlueter, Springfield’s Matt Semach, Struthers’ Alana Smith and McDonald’s Melissa Wasser.

Sebring superintendent Howard Friend earned the OHSAA’s Meritorious Service Award.
